As romance, they are innocent and cheesy. As dystopian books, they are exemplary but nothing special. I remember them being fun reads, and that's how I see them now.

Looking Back: I binge-read The Selection series in three days in December 2016 because it was so intriguing and captivating. Over the course of the book, her feelings change for the men she loves, she grows to appreciate the royalty surrounding her, and she begins to insert herself into things that don't involve her. We get a glimpse at her rebellious side (although mostly symbolic) when she is noted for her red hair and being from the poor parts of town. We see her feisty and stubborn side when she insists on wearing pants and yells at the prince. It turns out, the Selection was a positive change for her. I, for one, ship Aspen and America, so it was upsetting when she was removed from her home because of the Selection. She had a large family and love for her best friend. Of course, as YA books tend to go, America slowly falls in love with Maxon, drama happens, and another book is written and published.ĭevelopment Throughout the Book: In the beginning of The Selection, we saw America as a frightened, young and innocent, eager girl from the poor parts of town. When she is and arrives to the palace, she has every intention of getting out of there as fast as possible.

For The Selection and its series, I have chosen America Singer, the protagonist.īasic Information: America Singer is the stereotypical YA heroine: tom-boyish, feisty, gorgeous, and stubborn! From the beginning, she is in love with Aspen Leger, her best friend, and doesn't want to be cast into the Selection. Going Deeper: In every blog post, I will choose one outstanding character, setting, theme, or plot to discuss in greater depth. My Least Favourite Thing: I don't think I disliked anything about The One! It was a fun read and tied up all lose ends of The Selection and The Elite.

Cass either had the ending planned precisely as so from the first page of The Selection or she is an amazing writer (or both) because the ending was satisfying. My Favourite Thing: I love the ending! I don't want to give too much away, so I will just say that even though there was a big plot twist and sad end to a character, others got their happily-ever-after.
